Butcher block table #1

Okay, another day, another post about the basement. I promise, I’ll get to my Arduino, or my music, or something other than the basement, but if you asked my wife she would tell you she isn’t surprised that everything I have posted so far is about my two-year-and-running obsession.

Here’s the deal. We have two spaces that need tables. We did the Ikea thing. We looked for high-end tables. We thought about making our own (I lost the vote on that one). In the end, we did butcher block. The only issue is that one of our butcher block lengths was 108 inches! While the construction of THAT little number will be for another day (it is serving as a work-table right now… a very big one), I wanted to put some pictures of the smaller (71 inch x 29 inch) one for the kids space.

Seriously, if you don’t read the caption about the mineral oil, if you are doing your own butcher block, order it UNFINISHED and just buy the mineral oil at CVS, Safeway or some other grocery store. It is not hard and it will save you a surprising amount of money versus having the butcher block manufacturer do it.

Soon, I’ll show a little more of a step-by-step instruction on the longer table.

Basement, Finishing Touches Needed

A little out of order, but I was posting up images of the barn door projects and figured that the “finished” view of the basement might be nice.  I put some quotes around the word “finished” because I am lazy and enjoying by big screen projector too much to get around to installing all the quarter-round on the floor, hang the last few ceiling tiles, etc.  Still, I hope whoever is enjoying reading these posts (who are you, anyway?) will enjoy the images.

Equipment for the home theater is listed below with some handy Amazon links so you can give me some affiliate love!

Denon AVR-791 7.1 Channel A/V Home Theater Multi-Source / Multi-Zone Receiver with HDMI 1.4a supporting 1080p and 3D (Black)Audio Component Receivers)

Epson PowerLite Home Cinema 8350 (V11H373120)LCD Projectors)

Elite Screens EzFrame Fixed Frame Projection Screen, 16:9 Aspect Ratio – 120in. (Cine White)Presentation Projection Screens)

(actually, I have the 90″ but this one is even better (if you have the room))

Barn door goodness

Basement renovation post #1: The barn door project

As part of my basement renovation, my wife requested barn doors to give the basement a little more character.  Functionally, we had some large openings (two over 48″ wide) and we needed a door solution anyway, so I was game.

About $150 worth of pine from Lowes (4″ tongue in groove for panels, several 1×4 for cross pieces and one 1×6 for header) and another $150 of hardware (including track, hanger / rollers and various nuts and bolts) from a company whose name I will dig up and post as a comment and here is what they look like:

Lots more basement postings to come, including the finished product, the subfloor system I used to keep the water off my laminate (drycore) and the sub-pump system I hooked up to give me water sucking power even when the power to the house was out.  After all, when does the power get knocked out?  When it is raining like hell and your subpump is working very hard.  Lots of solutions, but I think mine might be the best!
